The Most Common Meditation Myth

Aug 17, 2023

Do you remember the last time you were able to completely quiet your mind?

I’m asking because this is probably the most common myth about meditation.

People often tell me “I can’t meditate because I can’t stop thinking.” You’re not failing at meditation just because you still have thoughts running through your mind!

The truth is, your mind produces thoughts just as naturally as your heart pumps the blood through your veins! When you sit down to meditate, just like your heart keeps beating, and your lungs keep breathing, your mind keeps thinking because that’s what minds do!

Meditation is a way to retrain your mind so that you can control what it pays attention to, and so that your thoughts no longer control you.

Through daily practice, you can learn to anchor your mind in the awareness that notices your thoughts and emotions – without getting swept up in them.

It is from this space that you can:

- Turn chaos into calm, busyness into...

The Secret of Life...

Jun 19, 2023

Have you heard the story about the Mexican fisherman and the American investment banker?

One of my favorite song lyrics is James Taylor's song, "The Secret O' Life" which starts out "The secret of life is enjoying the past of the time..."
The story about the fisherman has changed my life and perspective on work. Every time I read it, I am more inspired to enjoy the journey of life.

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellowfin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.
The Mexican replied, “Only a little while. The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish? The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs. The American then asked, “But what do you do with the rest of...

Our kids need our help right now

Apr 28, 2023

Some sobering statistics recently came out from the CDC:

  • Nearly 3 in 5 (57%) U.S. teen girls felt persistently sad or hopeless in 2021 (double that of boys and the highest level reported over the past decade)
  • 24% of girls have seriously thought of suicide
  • 13% of girls have attempted suicide

Data is clear that children develop the capacity to regulate through the process of being co-regulated by a safe, consistent, loving caregiver.

I recently listened to an excellent Rich Roll podcast and teen whisperer Lisa Damour, Ph.D. who is a Yale-educated psychotherapist with a doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan who specializes in education and child development. She is the author of three New York Times bestsellers: Untangled, Under Pressure, and The Emotional Lives of Teenagers—the latter being the subject of the podcast. Here is the key takeaway:

"The best gift we can give our teenagers is to try to be a steady presence. teenagers experience their own...

Everyone We Meet and Everyone We Know ALL Want The Same Thing

Apr 26, 2023
It can be really helpful to remember each day that we as humans all want the same thing. We all want to be happy.
Everyone we meet and everyone we know wants to be happy.

Everyone wants to be loved. There is no one who does not want love.
Deep down, we all want to be loved.

And deep down, we all want to feel connected.
To feel connected with each other, with our community, and with all beings.
We all want the same thing; To be happy, to be loved, and to feel connected.

It's helpful to cherish and appreciate ourselves and others each day.

We can do this by noticing any judgments, criticisms, or condemnations that we have of ourselves. And see if we can soften those judgments or simply let them go.

Notice any judgments, sharp criticism, or condemnation that we have of others, and see if we can soften those judgments.

Breathe in, cherish yourself. Breathe out, cherish others....

And during the day, extend that...

3 Magical Words

Dec 19, 2022

It's finals week for my teenagers and the stress is real!

I put these signs around the house to remind them that no matter what test scores say, they are enough.

All of our issues stem from the fact that we don't feel good enough, smart enough, pretty enough, loved enough, you name it. We then criticize ourselves harshly and say hurtful critical words to ourselves.

The way to reverse these patterns is to nourish, praise, and uplift ourselves with phrases like "I am enough."

These three magical life-changing words hold more power than we might imagine!

"I am enough. I know I'm enough. I've always been enough. I will always know I am enough.

I am enough now, I was enough then, and I will always be enough.

I am enough. I have enough. I do enough.

Yes, I can have this, I am enough. Yes, I can do this, I am enough. Yes, I will, I am enough. Yes, I deserve this, I am enough.

Everywhere and anytime I am enough."

Repeat these words until you truly feel that there is...

Imagine how you’ll feel when your intentions become your new reality

Sep 23, 2022

Aligning with nature as a practice can be transformative. Connecting with the energy of a new moon is a great place to start.

Breathwork is one of the most powerful ways to shift our energy, our frequency, and open to new ways of thinking, being, and navigating the world.

In New Moon Breathwork we will release whatever is ready to be let go of - anger, resentment, fear, stress, anxiety, limiting beliefs, blocks, self-doubt, inner turmoil, tension, judgment, sadness, lack, and scarcity. In this manifesting workshop, you will set intentions, breathe actively, open your heart, receive love, and vibrate higher through a breathwork experience that encompasses deep, rhythmic breaths curated to a musical playlist.

Here are some journal prompts and a short visualization to whet your appetite.

Take a nice, long, deep breath and visualize the new.

You’ve let go of what no longer serves you and set new intentions for what you truly desire.

3 big mistakes you’re making with yourSELF!

Mar 15, 2021

Over the last few years, I’ve had the pleasure to work with a lot of women who struggle with worry, anxiety, and self-criticism. They’re smart, driven, wonderful women who do so many things right.

And you know what I’ve noticed? They are all making the same mistakes that are jeopardizing the most important relationship in their lives, the one with themselves. You spend more time with the voice in your head than anyone else in your life, so you might as well make the relationship a loving one.

So today, I want to discuss the three most common mistakes in the hopes that discussing them will help you recognize the behaviors in your own life! And offer some alternatives that just might feel a whole lot better.

1. Worry

We tend to worry about the future and project all of the “worst-case scenarios” playing out in our minds. Instead, imagine how everything could work out better than you ever imagined. Your mind literally doesn’t know the...

7 Ways to Find More Peace This Holiday Season

Dec 17, 2020

The holidays can be a stressful time of year - especially in a year like 2020! Whether you’re dealing with re-arranging travel plans or taking care of family members, you may be wishing for nothing other than just some peace of mind. But how do you find that amidst all the hustle and bustle of daily life?

First, remember that lasting inner peace can’t come from anything or anyone outside of you. It must be cultivated within. Just like any other mental state or skill, you have the ability to strengthen the “peace muscles” in your brain.

The more you practice intentionally creating a peaceful state in your mind, the easier it will be for you to feel it next time. Your brain will create neural shortcuts to navigate life from this space of calm rather than through overwhelm and stress - whether through the holidays or any other time of year. And when you gain that sense of peace, it will be much easier for you to become a source of it for others!
