A home is a place of harmony where you can retreat from the hectic pace of the modern world to rest and rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. It is your sanctuary - your safe haven where you feel safe, relaxed, and at peace - and the energy in your home is important to your well-being.
As our homes are where we spend most of our time, it is important to have good energy flowing abundantly. After a time of illness, or transition, or as a complement to regular cleaning, space clearing can help us feel at peace in our environment. A cleansed and energized room feels renewed, full of light, fresh, and inviting when you enter.
Everything is made of energy, and that energy can easily build you up and bring you down. Like our bodies, our homes can pick up heavy, negative emotions. You know that your space has a low vibration when you feel heavy and unable to relax the second you walk in the door. Negative energy takes up space, and letting go of it paves the way for new things to come in.
How does a home pick up negative energy?
A home can pick up energy from many things, including arguments and useless clutter. It is important to clear home energies after an illness, argument, breakup, job transition, death, or loss, when you’re feeling stuck, or any other major life event. It’s a good practice to cleanse the energy of a new home, after completion of construction, or anytime you notice the home needs an energy reboot.
What are the benefits of a home cleansing, clearing, and blessing?
After cleansing, clearing, and blessing your home will feel refreshing, calming, and loving. Energy clearing can help you fall asleep more easily and feel more centered. It's a great message to the universe that you are ready to welcome abundance and love into your life. Many people also report new opportunities and beautiful moments as soon as they finish the clearing process.
After a house clearing, people typically report having better sleep and feeling more at peace at home.
Set a new intention for your home:
Form follows thought. Before you do anything else, set a specific intention for your home. What do you want your space to help you release? How do you want your home to feel? For example, you could say:
"My intention is to cleanse negative energy from my home so I am focused and productive" or "My intention is to release my ex's energy and feel peaceful again." Speak your intention out loud to set the shifts in motion.
Air everything out:
Open up all the windows and create a draft to let fresh air come through, even if it's freezing outside. Letting fresh air inside is the simplest way to purify a space.
Clear with blessings herbs:
Sage clears bacteria in the air and releases negative ions, which is linked to putting people in a positive mood. Sage smoke offers rapid delivery to the brain and efficient absorption to the body. Scientists have observed that sage can clear up to 94 percent of airborne bacteria in space and disinfect the air. Sage is believed to exude qualities of wisdom, clarity, and increasing spiritual awareness.
Once the area is ventilated and you’ve lit the sage, ask unwanted energy to leave your space ‘Any energy that is not of my highest and greatest good I lovingly command you leave now. You are not welcome to stay here. Please leave through the open window/door.’
Alternately, palo santo has been used in spiritual practices and healing ceremonies as far back as the Inca empire. Light a stick of palo santo and let the flame burn for up to one minute. Blow it out and walk through the rooms you wish to cleanse, allowing the smoke to waft through the space. Open closets and kitchen cupboards to cleanse every corner.
Add sound to your space:
Sound can be used to disperse stuck energy. Certain sound frequencies can resolve tension and clear out residual stress in the air. If you have a sound system, play sound frequencies to clear the space. If you have a bell, chime, tuning fork, or drum, you can play that as you walk through your whole space upon move-in. If you don't, simply clap rapidly, making sure not to miss any corners of the room.
Set the intention for the sound waves to move bad energy out and welcome good energy in. Close your eyes and let the sound vibrate around you and through you.
Purify with salt:
Pour salt into the four corners of your rooms to absorb negative energy, purify the space, and create layers of protection then let it sit as it moderates the flow of energy throughout your home and cleanses. After 48 hours, either vacuum or sweep the salt and throw it away in the trash.
Place crystals in each room:
Crystals are gifts from the earth that carry various beneficial vibrational properties.
Clear negative energy and ward off negative energy with black tourmaline and hematite. Protect your space with fluorite to keep out negative energy. Bless your space with amethyst for healing, quartz for spiritual wellness, jade for good luck, rose quartz for love and opening the heart, and citrine for prosperity.
Create an altar:
Use your altar as a place of contemplation, reflection, and relaxation. You can place your favorite affirmations, quotes, or prayers on your altar. Place some flowers or fresh greenery on the altar. Place a picture of something that represents the energy you desire in your space on your altar. Light a candle to attract and anchor the energy you desire. Add a crystal or stone for each quality you desire to bring into your new space and what you want to manifest there—be it health, wealth, joy, connection, love, creativity, or clarity. Name each quality out loud.
Ask for blessing and protection or offer prayers:
The blessing itself is personal. What do you want to create, manifest, or feel at home for the next year? Say this OUT LOUD to your home. With an attitude of gratitude say something like
"I ask that the highest vibration of love and light release, consume, cause and effect, of anything not in my highest good.”
The best prayers come from your heart, but here’s one I love from the book “Sacred Space” by Denise Lin (change the words to pray to the higher power of your understanding - God, Spirit, Universe, The Most High:
May the Creator that dwells in all things come forward and fill this home.
I ask that this house be a sanctuary for all who enter.
I ask that good thoughts and good actions emanate from this home.
May this home bring comfort and healing for all who live here.
May this home be a healing center of light and love.
I ask this in the name of the most holy Creator.
Spritz or diffuse the indoor space:
Walk around each room spraying a mixture of your favorite essential oils in spring water. I love lavender for peace, citrus scents like orange or lemon for happiness, and rose and jasmine for love.
Notice how much calmer and clearer you are! Celebrate.
You’ve created a safe cocoon in which to experience the process of true healing. Hug, dance, eat something delicious, or give your home a special gift you purchased for this special occasion! Celebration creates powerful momentum because it’s a state of gratitude for life.
May you be enveloped in your sacred space, may you welcome peace and harmony to dwell within you and surround you at all times, and may you have comfort, health, happiness, and joy!
