Debunking the 4 BIGGEST MEDITATION MYTHS

Mar 17, 2021

Have you had a chance to watch the replay of Thursday's live workshop? It's coming down tomorrow, so be sure to find some time to watch before it's gone. In the Q&A at the end, we answer some very specific questions about what IS and IS NOT working online and we share our best advice for how to get started with an online offering from scratch.

You can watch the replay here.

And along the lines of what is NOT working, we see so many people making false assumptions about what it takes to meditate. They talk themselves out of it before they even start!

We're debunking the 4 BIGGEST MYTHS ABOUT MEDITATION, right now..

Do you believe these four major myths about meditation and what it takes to enjoy  daily meditation practice?

I see so many people making false assumptions about what it takes to have a daily meditation practice. They talk themselves out of it before they even start!

I’m debunking the 4 BIGGEST MYTHS ABOUT MEDITATION, right now...

Myth #1 I’m “doing it wrong”

Last we checked, there’s no wrong way to meditate. You are enough! You don't need to become a monk, understand ancient religions, know about neuroscience and metacognition. If you can breathe, you can meditate!

Yes, you will need to practice and gain some emotional tools, but that's part of the journey. Embrace it and believe in yourself. We meditate so we can live a happy life, and each time you meditate, you are gifting yourself (and everyone whose lives you touch) the gift of presence.

It might feel hard or unpleasant at first, I get it, I've been there. But it'll make the rest of the areas of your life better, and you'll be glad you did it. Trust me.

Myth #2 “I can’t stop thinking.”

Believing that you can’t stop thinking is accurate! Please rest assured that when we meditate, our lungs keep breathing, and our heart keeps beating. Our mind keeps thinking, cause that’s what minds do! It’s no problem at all!

In fact, we think 50,000-70,000 thoughts a day, and there’s no stopping them. We practice noticing our thoughts. Each time you notice your thoughts, you’re strengthening your present moment awareness! We spend ⅔-¾ of our day consumed in thoughts, stories and limiting beliefs, 80% of which are negative according to the National Science Foundation. When we workout our physical body by doing bicep curls, we are strengthening our biceps. When we meditate, we’re strengthening our ability to choose better thoughts, let go of stress, and calm the f#%& down!

We guide the activity of the mind to a single point of awareness, allowing the sympathetic nervous system (fight flight) to go on standby, and awakening the parasympathetic nervous system as you shift into a state of rest and relaxation.

So rather than belittle yourself when you notice your mind is wondering, I suggest you congratulate yourself for noticing!... Doesn’t that feel better? And don’t you want to feel good? Would you like to calm down with me?

Myth #3 “Meditation is religious”

Many people practice meditation independently of any religious or spiritual beliefs or practices.

Meditation is a spiritual practice, regardless of your religious beliefs. The followers of each of the major religions have practiced meditation for centuries.

There are many different types of meditation, and at Anchor Meditation we offer secular meditations while providing opportunities to nurture your connection with self, soul, spirit, and the Creator of your understanding.

The bottom line is this: If you keep your conscious mind in the present, connected to your soul, spirit, and desires, you’re in the driver’s seat of your life.

Each of the 10 modules in our upcoming 10 Weeks to Calm and Centered Course is designed to help you shift so you stop letting your mind wander, and your subconscious behavior to run your life.

As you practice being conscious, thoughtful, aware, and intentional, you are more present, and you are in the driver’s seat of your life.

Myth #4 “I don’t have time”

Ha! I’m gonna call you out on that one girlfriend! If Oprah has time, you can find some too! Here are a few suggestions, from my heart to yours:

  • Ha! I’m gonna call you out on that one girlfriend!🤣 If Oprah has time, you can find some too! Here are a few suggestions, from my heart to yours:
  • 💛Take note of all the unproductive time you spend on social media, tablets, computers, TVs. Set aside 20% of that time for meditation. There’s more than enough time!
  • 💛Start with a small commitment to yourself. Maybe it’s 1 minute of breathing every morning after you brush your teeth. Tie it to a regular part of your daily routine, and make it a priority. Gradually increase your commitment as you notice how good you are beginning to feel!
  • 💛Shift the limiting belief “I don’t have enough time” to “I am excited to empower myself with a daily meditation practice and gain clarity about what’s important in my daily life, how I want to feel, and consciously create a life I love that feels good!”
  • 💛Make the time because you care about yourself, and you know it's for your own well being, and the wellness of everyone whose lives you touch.

Now that you can see these myths are just common misunderstandings, I don't want you to let them stop you from STARTING!

I’m inviting you to receive the support you need to be your best self!
