IG Interview Elizabeth Lesser + Tricia Hersey (1:09:06)

Elizabeth Lesser, Author of two of my favorite books: Eat Pray Love, and Big Magic, interviews Tricia Hersey, Bishop of the Nap Ministry about her enlightening new book Rest is Resistance: A Manifesto

“If you struggle with allowing yourself the grace to rest, if you find yourself equating productivity with self-worth, if you want to know why being busy and sleep-deprived has become a warped badge of honor, this conversation is for you.

Tricia’s book is an urgent call to action, but it’s unlike any call to action I’ve ever experienced. It’s more of a call to inaction, which is in itself radical.”

The Earthing Movie: The Remarkable Science of Grounding (1:15:32)

A groundbreaking and vitally important film, The Earthing Movie reveals that the answer to America’s biggest health crisis may be literally right under our feet. It’s called “grounding” or “earthing” and it means directly connecting one’s body to the Earth to restore the electromagnetic balance needed to maintain optimal health.

***Stress causes inflammation and inflammation is the root cause of all illnesses. Grounding, or earthing naturally reduces inflamation because if the body is grounded, you can’t have inflammation! I highly recommend this movie.***

How to make stress your friend | Kelly McGonigal (14:28)

New research suggests that stress may only be bad for you if you believe that to be the case. Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.

The Real Reason We Are Tired & What To Do About It I Saundra Dalton-Smith (9:34)

Sleep is only 1 of 7 types of rest that every person needs. We need physical rest, mental rest, social rest, sensory rest, creative rest, emotional rest, and spiritual rest. Rest should equal restoration in one of these 7 areas. (Binge watching TV and scrolling social media does not count as rest!)

How Does Meditation Help Us Sleep Better with Deepak Chopra (3:03)

Deepak Chopra explains the neuroscience of how meditation during the day positively affects your sleep at night.

Hidden Miracles of the Natural World with Louie Schwartzberg (7:24)

We live in a world of unseeable beauty, so subtle and delicate that it is imperceptible to the human eye. To bring this invisible world to light, filmmaker Louie Schwartzberg bends the boundaries of time and space with high-speed cameras, time lapses, and microscopes. In this TED Talk, he shares highlights from his latest project, a 3D film titled "Mysteries of the Unseen World," which slows down, speeds up and magnifies the astonishing wonders of nature.

Listen

Morning Magic Playlist

This playlist is a compilation of some of my favorite mood music for meditation, resonance, harmony, and deep relaxation. I listen to it in the morning and often have it in the background throughout the day. This music saved me during covid and has a calming effect throughout the environment, allowing listeners' energy to find coherence with the high vibrations of the lyrics, voices, and music.

Ram Dass x East Forest (4:15)

In June 2018, East Forest was invited to Ram Dass’ home in Maui to join in conversation and record brand new teachings from the legendary teacher.

After capturing these words of wisdom, East Forest returned to his studio in the high desert of Southern Utah to compose the soundtrack to beautifully support each songs’ subject.

Herbal Medicine

Sip: Nettles

Nettles is a an herb that connects us with the fabric of all inside of us and in the Earth that is wild, vital, and free. It nourishes our cells and our souls. It grounds our spirit, releasing tension from the physical and emotional body, allowing fear and tightness in the root chakra to dissolve. As  we become more grounded, we’re able to bring in nourishment and Earth energy into the body.

I recommend you drink nettles daily this month and notice how different you are when you’re flooded with nourishment and relaxation.

Nettles is supportive if you are unbalanced, giving your energy away and becoming depleted. It’s extremely helpful for caretakers, healers, parents, creators, and those who seek to strengthen their communication and mind.

Nettles is a nourishing herb and nutritive tonic, full of vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Very high in iron, magnesium, calcium, protein, B complex vitamins, silica, vitamin C, E, A, K and others, all that can be easily absorbed and used by the body. Nettles is rich in protein, cobalt, trace minerals, potassium, zinc, copper and sulphur.

Nettles are especially rich in chlorophyll, which is only one molecule removed from hemoglobin, so they feed and build the blood.

It is a tonic for the female and male reproductive system. It nourishes and restores the tissues of the body, increases energy, and assists the body in healing from chronic illness. It revitalizes deep reserves of vital energy, healing the adrenals and gently cleansing the body of toxins, improving the functioning of all systems of the body, flooding it with nourishment, and thus, over time, greatly increasing energy levels, stamina, resilience, cognitive and immune function.

Nettles is also an adaptogen, an herb that helps us adapt to environmental, physical and emotional stressors. It will particularly nourish and restore the musculoskeletal system, urinary tract, kidneys, digestive tract, liver, endocrine system, reproductive system, and respiratory system.

Nettles is a deep immune tonic and soothes allergies. Nettles cleanses wastes out of the body, increases nutrient absorption, and acts as a diuretic.

Nettles is a very safe herb, considered food medicine. It is safe for pregnant women, children, the elderly and people recovering from chronic illness. Do not drink nettles if you have kidney stones or any kidney related issues.

If you are local to San Francisco, you can purchase Nettles at Scarlet Sage. Otherwise, you can find it online at Mountain Rose Herbs among other places!

Books

Little Soul and The Sun
by Neil Donal Walsh

The Little Soul and the Sun is a simple and powerful story that brings children a very profound truth: there is not absolute good or bad--that underneath all that happens in the world, all that we call "good" and all that we call "bad," is love. Your child will discover a God that she or he can love, because God is love, as are all the Little Souls who are a part of God. And perhaps parents, too, will rediscover who they really are.

Daring to Rest
by Karen Brody

This is a book about yoga nidra, a meditation practice that helps with relaxation, sleep, rest, and healing. (One of the meditations you receive this month will be a yoga nidra practice!)

Though it comes from the yogic tradition, yoga nidra doesn’t look like a typical yoga class―the entire practice is done lying down. As you listen to a guided meditation, you’re gently taken into complete inner stillness, effortlessly releasing into a deeply restorative healing state that works on both cellular and subtle body levels.

Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto
by Tricia Hersey

What would it be like to live in a well-rested world? Far too many of us have claimed productivity as the cornerstone of success. Brainwashed by capitalism, we subject our bodies and minds to work at an unrealistic, damaging, and machine‑level pace –– feeding into the same engine that enslaved millions into brutal labor for its own relentless benefit.

In Rest Is Resistance, Tricia Hersey, aka the Nap Bishop, casts an illuminating light on our troubled relationship with rest and how to imagine and dream our way to a future where rest is exalted. Our worth does not reside in how much we produce, especially not for a system that exploits and dehumanizes us. Rest, in its simplest form, becomes an act of resistance and a reclaiming of power because it asserts our most basic humanity. We are enough. The systems cannot have us.
