What does it mean to be compassionate?

"If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."  The Dalai Lama

What does it mean to be compassionate?

Having compassion for someone else is what motivates us as to go out of our way and help another who is in pain. It is our human desire to try and alleviate the suffering of others.

But, think about it: Do we ever show compassion for ourselves?

Do we cut ourselves some slack when we forget to pack our kid's favorite snack on test day? Do we show ourselves love when we forget a friend's birthday?

The idea of self-compassion is something that I've been continuously trying to practice - so that I could dip further into my pot when I see someone else in pain.

This past Friday, we had our first session of our Compassion Series at Anchor. We contemplate these questions, and allow ourselves to get quiet so that we could see what self-compassion feels like, too.
